Two types of infinite systems of interacting chains with memory of variable length are considered. The first system incorporates spontaneous spike times. The spikes can be interpreted as an external stimulus or as an autonomous activity of the brain. Under some special conditions, existence and uniqueness of this class is proved. A second result refers to the existence and uniqueness in systems with uniformly summable memory. Both proofs make use of a Kalikow-type decomposition in random environment or in space-time. Further, the correlation between successive inter-spike intervals in the critical directed Erdös-Rényi random graph is studied.
