Let \((\Omega, \Sigma, \mu)\) be a sigma-finite measure space. For \(A\in\Sigma\), denote by \({\mathbf 1}_A\) the characteristic function of \(A\). A linear operator \(T: L_p(\mu) \to L_0(\mu)\) is called almost compact (measure compact) if there is a partition of \(\Omega\) into a disjoint sequence of \(A_n \in \Sigma\) with \(\mu(A_n) < \infty\) such that, for every \(n \in \mathbb N\), the set \(\{{\mathbf 1}_{A_n}Tf: \|f\|_p \leq 1\}\) is relatively compact in \(L_p(\mu)\) (in \(L_0(\mu)\) equipped with the topology of convergence in measure, respectively). For \(p \in (2, \infty)\), the author constructs an example of a measure-compact operator \(T: L_p[0,1] \to L_2[0,1]\) that is not almost compact. For some classes of closed linear operators in \(L_p\), it is demonstrated that the resolvents of these operators are almost compact or measure-compact. Some methods for the reduction of linear functional equations of the second kind in \(L_p\) with almost compact or measure-compact operators to equivalent linear integral equations in \(L_p\) with quasidegenerate Carleman kernels are presented; special attention is paid to the case of \(p = 2\).
