The paper is a continuation to two dimensions of the univariate case considered in the papers due to \textit{C. Conti} et al. [Linear Algebra Appl. 431, No. 10, 1971--1987 (2009; Zbl 1176.65016) and Adv. Comput. Math. 35, No. 2--4, 217--241 (2011; Zbl 1293.65016)]. The authors follow an approach motivated by the work of \textit{A. F. Rabarison} and \textit{J. de Villiers} [Approximation algorithms for complex systems. Proceedings of the 6th international conference on algorithms for approximation, Ambleside, UK, August 31st -- September 4th, 2009. Berlin: Springer. Springer Proceedings in Mathematics 3, 275--292 (2011; Zbl 1250.65027)], on the characterization of interpolating bivariate mask symbols. An algebraic construction of bivariate interpolatory subdivision masks induced by three-dimensional box spline subdivision schemes is presented.
