The author compares different extremal and separation principles for two not necessary convex sets in Banach spaces. Especially a new separation theorem in Asplund spaces in terms of Fréchet subdifferentials and Fréchet normal cones is provided, showing that: if the closed sets \(\Omega_1,\Omega_2\subset X\) are separable in the point \((\overline x_1,\overline x_2)\in\Omega_1\times \Omega_2\) (i.e. if \(\overline x_1+\overline x_2\) is a boundary point of \(\Omega_1+\Omega_2\)), then for every \(\varepsilon>0\) there are \(x_i\in\Omega_i\cap(\overline x_i+ \varepsilon\mathbb{B})\) and \(p^*\in X^*\) with \(\| p^*\|= 1\) such that \[ p^*\in(\widehat N(x_1,\Omega_1) + \varepsilon\mathbb{B}^*)\cap (\widehat N(x_2,\Omega_2)+ \varepsilon\mathbb{B}^*), \] which is equivalent to \[ p^*\in(\widehat\partial\,\text{dist}(x_1, \Omega_1)+ \varepsilon\mathbb{B}^*)\cap (\widehat\partial\,\text{dist}(r_2, \Omega_2)+ \varepsilon\mathbb{B}^*). \] The assertion is a revised version of the known separation theorem of Borwein and Jofré who used a general subdifferential notion and its associated normal cone which are in general larger than the Fréchet objects.
