Let \(G\) be a finitely generated group. The subgroup zeta function of \(G\), denoted by \(\zeta_G(s)\), is defined as the Dirichlet series associated to the sequence \(\{a_n(G)\}_n\), where \(a_n(G)\) is the number of subgroups of \(G\) of index \(n\). A fundamental question that arises is to ask what kind of equivalence class of \(G\) is determined by the zeta function \(\zeta_G(s)\). In particular, does \(\zeta_G(s)=\zeta_H(s)\) imply \(G\cong H\)? This question has a negative answer. The purpose of this article is to give a positive answer in the case \(G\) belongs to a class of finitely generated, torsion-free and nilpotent groups to which the discrete Heisenberg group \(U_3(\mathbb Z)\) belongs and every \(G\) in this class is commensurable with \(U_3(\mathbb Z)\times\mathbb Z^{m-1}\) for some \(m\), or a free Abelian group.
