Branching rules for irreducible representations of a group refer to their decomposition when restricted to an interesting subgroup. In representation theory, they often provide useful information. For example, the theory of minimal \(K\)-types in the case of Lie groups [\textit{D. A. Vogan jun.}, Ann. Math. (2) 109, 1--60 (1979; Zbl 0424.22010)] may be viewed as branching rules for restriction to a maximal compact subgroup, or the theory of types in the case of \(p\)-adic groups [\textit{C. J. Bushnell} and \textit{P. C. Kutzko}, The admissible dual of \(\mathrm{GL}(N)\) via compact open subgroups. Annals of Mathematics Studies, 129. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press (1993; Zbl 0787.22016)] and [\textit{A. Moy} and \textit{G. Prasad}, Invent. Math. 116, No. 1--3, 393--408 (1994; Zbl 0804.22008)], in which various open compact subgroups emerge. For \(p\)-adic groups, however, describing branching rules for restriction of irreducible representations to a maximal compact subgroup is still an open problem in general. There is a bunch of work on this problem in some cases including \(\mathrm{PGL}_2\) [\textit{A. J. Silberger}, \(\mathrm{PGL}_2\) over the \(p\)-adics: its representations, spherical functions, and Fourier analysis. Berlin-Heidelberg-New York: Springer-Verlag. (1970; Zbl 0204.44102)] and [\textit{A. J. Silberger}, Math. Ann. 229, 1--12 (1977; Zbl 0352.22017)], \(\mathrm{GL}_2\) [\textit{W. Casselman}, Math. Ann. 206, 311--318 (1973; Zbl 0253.20062)] and [\textit{K. Hansen}, Pac. J. Math. 130, No. 2, 327--349 (1987; Zbl 0659.22011)], Weil representation of \(Sp_{2n}\) \textit{D. Prasad}, [in: Murty, V. Kumar (ed.) et al., Number theory. Proceedings of the international conference on discrete mathematics and number theory, Tiruchirapalli, India, January 3--6, 1996 on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Ramanujan Mathematical Society. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society. Contemp. Math. 210, 171--193 (1998; Zbl 0922.11041)] and [\textit{K. Maktouf} and \textit{P. Torasso}, ``Restriction de la représentation de Weil à un sous-groupe compact maximal ou à un tore maximal elliptique'' (2011), \url{arXiv:1101.0560}], \(\mathrm{GL}_3\) [\textit{P. S. Campbell} and \textit{M. Nevins}, J. Algebra 321, No. 9, 2422--2444 (2009; Zbl 1168.22008)], [\textit{P. S. Campbell} and \textit{M. Nevins}, Can. J. Math. 62, No. 1, 34--51 (2010; Zbl 1184.22008)] and [\textit{U. Onn} and \textit{P. Singla}, J. Algebra 397, No. 1, 1--17 (2014; doi:10.1016/j.algebra.2013.08.022)]. For \(\mathrm{SL}_2\) the branching rules for principal series representations have already been considered by the author [Can. J. Math. 57, No. 3, 648--672 (2005; Zbl 1071.22008)]. The paper under review provides the branching rules for restriction of supercuspidal representations of \(\mathrm{SL}_2(k)\), where \(k\) is a non-Archimedean local field of odd residual characteristic, to the maximal compact subgroup \(\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathcal{R})\), where \(\mathcal{R}\) is the ring of integers of \(k\) (the restriction to the other conjugacy class of maximal compact subgroups is completely analogous). Thus, it complements the results in [\textit{M. Nevins}, Can. J. Math. 57, No. 3, 648--672 (2005; Zbl 1071.22008)]. The results are based on the classification of supercuspidal representations [\textit{J.-K. Yu}, J. Am. Math. Soc. 14, No. 3, 579--622 (2001; Zbl 0971.22012)], [\textit{J.-L. Kim}, J. Am. Math. Soc. 20, No. 2, 273--320 (2007; Zbl 1111.22015)], [\textit{J. Hakim} and \textit{F. Murnaghan}, IMRP, Int. Math. Res. Pap. 2008, Article ID rpn005, 166 p. (2008; Zbl 1160.22008)], and distinguishes between depth zero and positive depth cases. The branching rules are described in terms of Shalika's classification of irreducible representations of \(\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathcal{R})\) [\textit{J. A. Shalika}, in: H. Hida (ed.) et al., Contributions to automorphic forms, geometry, and number theory. Papers from the conference in honor of Joseph Shalika on the occasion of his 60th birthday, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, USA, May 14--17, 2002. Baltimore, MD: Johns Hopkins University Press. 1--38 (2004; Zbl 1076.11032)]. Using branching rules, the paper also analyzes the intertwining over \(\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathcal{R})\) of different supercuspidal representations.
