Mixed principal eigenvalues in dimension one (Q373427)

The extended generator of a scalar diffusion on an interval with reflection on one boundary and absorption on the other is considered. This corresponds to Neumann and Dirichlet boundary condition, respectively, the latter notion extendable to a boundary at infinity by interpreting it in the limiting sense. For both the Neumann-Dirichlet and Dirichlet-Neumann case, variational formulas for the principal eigenvalue are derived, leading to criteria for positivity, upper and lower bounds, and approximate computational schemes. For the Neumann-Neumann case, monotonicity of an approximation procedure is established.
