Fusion systems, whilst having old and well-established roots in group theory and topology, is a young subject progressing rapidly and yet to fully settle on all of its basic definitions. It is a fast growing area in modern group theory. This new theory provides a link between finite group theory, modular representation theory and homology theory. This paper is the third in a series of papers of the author. The other two papers are [\textit{M. Aschbacher, R. Kessar, B. Oliver}, Fusion systems in algebra and topology. Lond. Math. Soc. Lect. Note Ser. 391. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press (2011; Zbl 1255.20001) and \textit{M. Aschbacher}, Invent. Math. 180, No. 2, 225-299 (2010; Zbl 1234.20025)] listed in the references of this paper. In the paper the author proves results on 2-fusion systems related to the 2-fusion systems of groups of Lie type over \(\mathbf F_2\) and certain sporadic groups. The results are used in a later paper of the author to determine the \(N\)-systems: the 2-fusion systems of \(N\)-groups.
