Suppose that \(R\) is an associative ring with a unit element and with an automorphism \(\sigma\). The aim of the paper is to classify ring automorphisms of the skew polynomial ring \(R[t;\sigma]\). It is not assumed that \(R\) is stable by these automorphisms. Suppose that \(\sigma\) is not an X-automorphism of a domain \(R\) and \(g\) is an automorphism of \(R[t;\sigma]\). Then either \(g(t)=at\), \(g^{-1}(t)=bt\) for some \(a^{\pm 1},b^{\pm 1}\in R\) or \(g(t),g^{-1}(t)\in R\). Let \(R\) be a commutative domain and \(\sigma\) nonidentical. Assume that \(g(t)\in R\) for some automorphism \(g\) as above. Then there exists a subdomain \(\Phi\) in \(R\) such that \(R=\Phi[g(t)]\) and \(g(t)\) is transcendental over \(\Phi\), \(\sigma\) acts identically on \(\Phi\) and \(\sigma(g(t))=qg(t)\) for some unit \(u\in\Phi\). Moreover \(R\) is a quantum polynomial algebra \(R=\Phi_q\langle g(t),t\rangle\). If \(\sigma\) has infinite order then \(\Phi\) is the algebra of \(\sigma\)-invariants in \(R\). The final result classifies all automorphisms of quantum polynomial algebra \(\Phi_q\langle X,Y\rangle\). Note that if \(\Phi\) is a field then in generic case all \(\Phi\)-algebra automorphisms of quantum polynomial algebras were classified by \textit{V. A. Artamonov} and \textit{R. Wisbauer} [Algebr. Represent. Theory 4, No. 3, 219-247 (2001; Zbl 1019.16014)].
