Let \(L\) be an infinite dimensional Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. An inner ideal of \(L\) is a subspace \(I\) such that \([I, [I,L]]\subset L\). A Lie algebra is locally finite if every finitely generated subalgebra is finite dimensional. Among all simple locally finite dimensional Lie algebras we highlight finitary simple Lie algebras and diagonal simple locally finite Lie algebras. A finitary Lie algebra consists of finite-rank linear transformations of a vector space, and diagonal algebras are limits of diagonal embeddings of finite dimensional Lie algebras. In this paper the authors prove that proper non-zero inner ideals of a simple locally finite Lie algebra \(L\) only appear when \(L\) is diagonal, and the existence of such inner ideals constitutes another characterization of such a Lie algebra. Moreover, they define regular inner ideals: when \(L=[A,A]\) for an associative algebra, a regular inner ideal is a subspace of \(L\) such that \(I^2=0\) and \(IAI\subseteq I\) (similarly for associative algebras with involution and their skew-symmetric elements). They describe basic properties of regular inner ideals of simple diagonal locally finite Lie algebras and prove partial results towards the conjecture of all inner ideals of non-finitary-orthogonal simple diagonal locally finite Lie algebras being regular. Finally they describe regular inner ideals of finitary simple Lie algebras and characterize locally finite finitary Lie algebras as those having minimal regular inner ideals.
