The notion of almost Gorenstein rings, a special class of one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local rings, was introduced by \textit{V. Barucci} and \textit{R. Fröberg} [J. Algebra 188, No. 2, 418--442 (1997; Zbl 0874.13018)] for analytically unramified local rings. This paper gives an alternative definition of this notion which one can apply to the rings that are not necessarily analytically unramified. The authors used this alternative definition to fill in a gap in the proof of [(Zbl 0874.13018), Proposition 25] and solve in full generality the problem of when the algebra \(\mathfrak m\): \(\mathfrak m\) is a Gorenstein ring, where \(\mathfrak m\) denotes the maximal ideal in a given Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension one. In addition, the paper also give a series of characterizations of almost Gorenstein rings obtained by idealization and construct several examples of analytically ramified almost Gorenstein rings that are not Gorenstein.
