All algebras considered in the paper are over an infinite field \(k\) of positive characteristic \(p\). Let \(F\) be the free associative algebra with 1 over \(k\) freely generated by \(x_1,x_2,\ldots\) and denote by \(T^{(l)}\) its T-ideal generated by the commutators of length \(l\). The study of the T-spaces (vector subspaces of \(F\) that are closed under endomorphisms of \(F\)) in the relatively free algebra \(F^{(l)}=F/T^{(l)}\) is quite important. The case \(l=3\) was studied extensively and examples of infinite ascending chains of T-spaces in \(F^{(3)}\) were constructed. The paper under review commences the study of the T-spaces in the algebra \(F^{(4)}\). The author gives explicitly a system of linear generators of the T-space \(T^{(3)}/T^{(4)}\) for the cases of 2 and 3 free generators of \(F\). As a consequence the author concludes that there are infinitely based T-spaces in \(T^{(3)}/T^{(4)}\).
