The authors study a coupling of a nonlinear Schrödinger-type equation and a Korteweg-de Vries-type equation, which describes interactions between long and short dispersive waves. They obtain existence and stability results for a two-parameter family of solitary traveling-wave solutions by finding the minimizers of an energy functional subject to two constraints. The relative compactness of the minimizing sequences is proved by using the concentration-compactness principle, which requires establishing the subadditivity of the two-parameter variational problem involved.
