Motivated by a paper of \textit{E. M. Coven} [Z. Wahrscheinlichkeitstheor. Verw. Geb. 20, 129--133 (1971; Zbl 0211.56405)], endomorphisms for a class of almost automorphic symbolic dynamical systems are described. Namely the following results is proved: Let \(G\) be an abelian group acting on a compact Hausdorff space \(X\). Suppose that \((X,G)\) is minimal and an almost 1-1-extension of its maximal equicontinuous factor \((Y,G)\) via the factor map \(\pi\). If the subset of \(Y\) where \(\pi\) fails to be 1-1 is an orbit \(O_G(y_1)\) for some \(y_1\in Y\), then every endomorphism is of the form \(T_g: X\to X\), \(T_g(x)=xg\) for some \(g\in G\). The result is then applied to Sturmian systems and certain generalized Sturmian systems. It is also proved that every endomorphism of the discrete chair substitution tiling system is an element of \(\mathbb Z^2\)-action.
