Using the semigroup approach, the authors study the question of existence and uniqueness of solutions to a general class of multi-component coagulation-fragmentation equations and investigate a system in which not only the cluster size can change but also the shape profile can evolve. The authors assume that the particles join together to form a lattice and represent the shape of a cluster by its diameter. Then, they use the analytical approach with a flexible interpretation of the concept of diameter to consider a mixed model in which the size of a cluster is represented by a discrete variable, but the diameter is a continuous variable. The model discussed in this paper can be extended to one which allows for the formation of clusters with diameters less than the maximum. The main tool from semigroup theory applied in the paper to obtain the main results is the Voigt-Kato theorem.
