The authors prove an existence result and a global stability result for the evolution Benjamin-Bona-Mahoni-Burgers problem \(u_{t}-u_{txx}-u_{xx}+f(u)_{x}=0\)\ in \((0,+\infty )\times \mathbb{R}_{+}\) with the initial condition \(u(0,x)=u_{0}(x)\rightarrow _{x\rightarrow +\infty}u_{+}\) and the boundary condition \(u(t,0)=u_{b}\). Here \(u_{b}<u_{+} \) are two given constant states. The function \(f\in C^{2}(\mathbb{R})\) is supposed to be non-convex with at least one inflection point. More precisely, \(u_{\ast }\in (u_{b},u_{+})\) is the first inflection point of \(f\) which satisfies \(f^{\prime \prime }>0\) on \([u_{b},u_{\ast })\) and \(f\) non-convex on \([u_{\ast },u_{+})\). The authors introduce the steady equation \(\phi _{xx}=f(\phi )_{x}\) with the boundary conditions \(\phi (0)=u_{b}\) and \( \lim_{x\rightarrow \infty }\phi (x)=u_{+}\) and they look for a monotonically increasing solution of this steady problem. This is proved under further hypotheses on \(f\) and adapting some classical existence results. Then, the authors introduce the function \(v(t,x)=u(t,x)-\phi (x)\) and they write the problem satisfied by \(v\). The main result of the paper proves the existence of a unique smooth solution \(v\) which further satisfies the stability result \(\lim_{t\rightarrow \infty }\left\| v(t,\cdot )\right\| _{L^{\infty }( \mathbb{R}^{2})}=0\). For the proof, the authors first establish a local in time existence result for a problem similar to that satisfied by \(v\) but posed on \([\tau ,+\infty )\times \mathbb{R}_{+}\), with \(\tau >0\). They then prove sharp estimates on \(v\) and its partial derivatives, sometimes in weighted Sobolev spaces.
