This paper tackles the open (and difficult) problem of determining the number of topologically distinct ways in which a given finite group \(G\) can act faithfully as a group of automorphisms of a compact oriented surface \(X\) of given genus \(g > 1\). Every such action is given by an epimorphism \(\theta\! : \Gamma \to G\), where \(\Gamma\) is a Fuchsian group and \(\Lambda = \ker\theta\) is the fundamental group of \(X\) (so that \(X\) is obtainable as the quotient of the upper half plane \(\mathbf{H}\) by \(\Lambda\)). Attention is focussed on the case where \(G\) is cyclic and the action of \(G\) is \textit{quasiplatonic} --- that is, \(\Gamma\) is a triangle group, with signature \((0; m_1,m_2,m_3)\). The authors give explicit enumeration formulae, and illustrate their approach with an application to the cyclic groups of orders \(315\) and \(360\). Unfortunately there are some errors in the lists of actions given for \(C_{315}\) and \(C_{360}\) (with a small number of cases either missing, or over- or under-counted, and the case \((m_1,m_2,m_3) = (15,21,315)\) wrongly included for \(C_{315}\)), but these appear to be simply transcription errors, as the correct entries are consistent with the enumeration formulae.
