Nilpotent-by-periodic commutator subgroups of automorphisms. (Q380421)

Let \(\varphi\) be an automorphism of prime order \(p\) of a group \(G\). The author asks the question whether the condition that \(C_G(\varphi)\) is periodic implies that \([G,\varphi]\), or even \(G\) itself, must be nilpotent-by-periodic. The main result, however, is about the case where \(G\) is nilpotent of class 2 from the outset. The theorem, which is too technical to be stated here, roughly speaking, says that in general \([G,\varphi]\) is rarely Abelian-by-periodic.
