The subject of this monograph is a general overview of theories and methodologies for deriving rheological constitutive equations for nonlinear viscoelastic fluids. The attendant methodologies used here are both those developed independently of thermodynamic conditions and those developed within a thermodynamic framework, in each case with emphasis on the historical context. In particular, the monograph presents and comments on canonical forms of Maxwell-like constitutive differential equations and single integral constitutive equations. The presentation and commentary also cover the Hadamard and dissipative type of instabilities, which the above-mentioned differential equations may be subject to.
