One of the main results of the paper states that if a Pontjagin number \(p_\lambda[N]\not=0\) of a \(4n\)-dimensional closed oriented smooth manifold \(N^{4n}\) is nonzero then any circle action on \(N\) has at least \(m(\lambda)+1\) fixed points. Here \(\lambda\) is a sequence \((m_1, m_2, \dots, m_n)\) such that \(\sum j\cdot m_j=n\) and \(m(\lambda)= \max\{m_1, \dots, m_n\}\). The proof uses the Bott residue formula. The authors also present a similar result for \({\mathbb Z}_p\)-actions on unitary manifolds. Their other theorem states that if \({\mathbb Z}_p\) (where \(p\) is a prime) acts on a closed connected unitary manifold \(M^{2n}\) with isolated fixed points and a Chern number \(c_\lambda[M]\) is not divisible by \(p\) then \(p\geq m(\lambda)+1\).
