The book under consideration is an introduction to partial differential equations and to the finite element method for mechanics and arises primarily from the university courses given by the author. It presents a well thought-out and thoroughly written first course in applications of partial differential equations and of the finite element method for engineering sciences, leading from foundations of functional analysis and finite element method to various worked problems. The exposition is relatively short and does not contain exercises, but each chapter ends with references to other relative books. The book consists of Part I entitled ``Theory'' and of Part II entitled ``Worked problems''. Part 1 contains two chapters: ``Applications of functional analysis to partial differential equations'' and ``Finite element method''. The Part II includes the chapters ``Variational formulations of problems with elliptic boundary conditions'', ``Finite element methods and standard differential problems'', ``Mechanics of deformable solids'', ``Strength of materials'', ``Nonlinear problems''. The subject index rounds up the book and made it convenient for use. The book can serve as a foundation for a three or four semester course for mechanics students or can be useful as support for all who are studying or teaching applications of mathematical and numerical methods for engineering sciences. It can be useful for all those who wish to see both the mathematical background of numerical algorithms on the one hand, and examples of its effective use in the solution of practical problems on the other hand. The reader will be able to follow the presentation with a minimum previous knowledge. The researcher can find a compact presentation of the mentioned topics, in particulary giving access to classical as well as to modern results.
