Given a metric continuum \(X\), a nonempty subset \(A\) of \(X\) is a shore set provided that there exists a sequence of subcontinua \(A_n\) such that each \(A_n\) does not intersect \(A\) and the sequence \(A_n\) tends to \(X\), with the Hausdorff metric. A shore point is a point \(p\) in \(X\) such that \({p}\) is a shore set. Shore sets were introduced in [\textit{L. Montejano-Peimbert} and \textit{I. Puga-Espinosa}, Topology Appl. 46, No. 1, 41--54 (1992; Zbl 0789.54010)] to study conditions under which there exist neighborhoods of the element \(X\), in the hyperspace of subcontinua \(C(X)\), homeomorphic to the Hilbert cube. In the paper under review, the author studies general properties of shore sets. In particular, she studies relationships between shore points, non-cut points and points of irreducibility. For example, using a classical result by R. H. Bing, she proves that every continuum contains at least two shore points. With this she obtains as a corollary that each continuum contains at least two non-cut points. The paper also contains characterizations of the arc and the simple closed curve by using shore points.
