Let \(\zeta_k(G)\), \(\gamma_{k+1}(G)\) denote the \(k\)-th term of the upper (respectively, lower) central series of the group \(G\). A classical theorem, attributed to \textit{I. Schur} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 127, 20-50 (1904; JFM 35.0155.01)], asserts that if \(G/\zeta_1(G)\) is finite then \(\gamma_2(G)\) is also finite. Generalizing this, \textit{R. Baer} [Math. Ann. 124, 161-177 (1952; Zbl 0046.02202)] proved that if \(G/\zeta_k(G)\) is finite then \(\gamma_{k+1}(G)\) is also finite. Here \(k\) is a natural number. Quantitative versions of these results also exist. Recently there have been several different very interesting generalizations of these results (the generalizations do not necessarily hold for all groups) and the reader is urged to carefully study this paper where some of these results are mentioned. The main theorems recorded here are as follows. Theorem A: Let \(G\) be a locally generalized radical group and let \(Z\) be the upper hypercenter of \(G\). Suppose that \(Z=\zeta_k(G)\) for some natural number \(k\). Suppose that \(G/Z\) has finite special rank \(r\). Then \(\gamma_{k+1}(G)\) has finite special rank at most \(\tau_1(r,k)\), for some function \(\tau_1\). Theorem B: Let \(G\) be a group, let \(Z\) be the upper hypercentre of \(G\) and let \(L\) be the hypercentral residual of \(G\). Suppose that \(Z=\zeta_k(G)\), for some natural number \(k\) and that \(G/Z\) is locally finite of special rank \(r\). Then \(L\) is a locally finite group of special rank at most \(\beta(r)\) for some function \(\beta\) and \(G/L\) is hypercentral. The proof of Theorem B of this paper is most interesting and involves the theory of \(G\)-central and \(G\)-hypereccentric modules and the \(Z\)-decomposition (see [\textit{L. A. Kurdachenko} et al., Artinian modules over group rings. Basel: Birkhäuser (2007; Zbl 1110.16001)]).
