The author considers the Ginzburg-Landau system of superconductivity in the presence of a magnetic field. The existence of a global minimizer for the Ginzburg-Landau energy under the hypothesis that the magnetic potential is bounded in infinity norm is proven first. Next, the author considers an optimal control problem whose state equation is of Ginzburg-Landau type. The existence of the solution of the problem is given. Finally, the so-called generalized method of lines is proposed for the numerical solution of the problem. The convergence of the method and approximation errors are discussed. Some numerical examples where the proposed method is used are presented.
