      This article provides an overview of the research of the renowned Swedish mathematician Lars V. Hörmander who passed away on 25 November 2012 at the age of eighty one. The recipient of the Fields Medal in 1962, the Wolf Prize in 1988 and the Steele Prize in 2006, Lars Hörmander was one of the most influential mathematicians of the twentieth century. He made significant contributions to the theory of partial differential equations and published eight books, including the famous four-volume treatise [The analysis of linear partial differential operators. Vol. I--IV. Berlin: Springer (1983--85; Zbl 0521.35001; Zbl 0521.35002; Zbl 0601.35001; Zbl 0612.35001)]. A great mathematical writer, Lars Hörmander is well known for his concise and precise writing style combined with a broad vision of the subject and exceptional technical abilities. The article concludes with an extensive list of references many of which were written by Professor Hörmander.
