The scalar inviscid Burgers-Hopf equation is discretized in space variable and then cast in terms of a `mean' dynamics and a `fluctuation' term. The latter is simplified using the so called stochastic mode reduction procedure which ensures closure by replacing a quadratic term by an autonomous Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type term. This is further modified by separating the time scales of the mean dynamics and the stochastic fluctuation dynamics, putting the latter on a faster time scale. A reduced model is obtained in the infinite time scale separation limit. The closure approximation is tested by numerical simulation.
