An operator space \(X\) is called a ternary ring of operators (TRO for short) if there exists a complete isometry \(\iota\) from \(X\) into a \(C^*\)-algebra such that \(\iota (x) \iota(y)^* \iota(z) \in \iota(X)\) for all \(x, y,z \in X\). The author shows that any TRO which is a dual Banach space can be decomposed into the direct sum of a two-sided ideal, a left ideal, and a right ideal in some von Neumann algebra, using an extreme point of the unit ball of the TRO. This result generalizes a previous contribution due to \textit{R. R. Smith} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 128, No. 11, 3461--3462 (2000; Zbl 0962.46042)] which shows that every finite-dimensional injective operator space embeds into a finite-dimensional \(C^*\)-algebra \(A\) as a corner, that is, is completely isometrically isomorphic to an operator subspace of the form \(pAp^\perp\) for a projection \(p\in A\).
