The customary method for constructing a functional calculus for unbounded operators is to first use the functional calculus and spectral resolution for bounded operators to create a spectral resoultion for an unbounded operator \(T\), then use this resolution to develop the functional calculus. In this paper, two theorems of \textit{F. Riesz} and \textit{E. R. Lorch} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 39, 331--340 (1936; Zbl 0013.40504; JFM 62.0450.03)] are used to pass directly from the functional calculus for bounded symmetric operators to that of unbounded self-adjoint operators, and making particularly transparent the manner in which properties of the functional calculus for bounded operators are inherited by those which are unbounded.
