There is a famous result by I. James asserting the existence of a natural weak homotopy equivalence \(JX= X_\infty \longrightarrow \Omega \Sigma X\) for a suitable topological space \(X\). In a previous article the present authors extended this result from topological spaces to model categories \(\mathbb C\) satisfying a \textit{cube axiom}. A. Gray established a relative version of I. James result, yielding a weak homotopy equivalence between a space \((X,A)_\infty\) and the homotopy fibre \(F\) of the pinching map \(X\cup CA \longrightarrow \Sigma A\) for a cofibration \(A \longrightarrow X\), \[ (X,A)_\infty \longrightarrow F \] (now again for topological spaces). In the present paper the authors establish conditions, defined in an arbitrary model category \(\mathbb C\) satisfying a cube axiom, ensuring the existence of a weak homotopy equivalence \((X,A)_\infty \longrightarrow F\) with appropriate definitions of \((X,A)_\infty\) and \(F\) as objects in \(\mathbb C\), generalizing the original definitions for topological spaces. \(A \longrightarrow X\) is now a cofibration in \(\mathbb C\) .
