Let \(G\) be an abelian group equipped with the discrete topology, \({\mathbb C}^G\) be the set of all complex valued functions defined on \(G\). The set \({\mathbb C}^G\) is a locally convex topological vector space equipped with the pointwise operations and the product topology. A closed linear subspace \(V\subseteq {\mathbb C}^G\) is called a variety on \(G\), if it is translation invariant, that is if \(f(x)\in V\) then \(\tau_y f(x):= f(x+y)\in V\) for each \(y\in G\). A continuous homomorphism of \(G\) into the multiplicative group of nonzero complex numbers is called an exponential, and a continuous homomorphism of \(G\) into the additive group of complex numbers is called an additive function. A function is a polynomial if it belongs to the algebra generated by the additive functions. A product of a polynomial and exponential is called an exponential monomial. For the space \({\mathbb C}^G\), the spectral synthesis problems can be formulated in the following way: are the linear combinations of all exponential monomials of each variety dense in this variety. In [the author and \textit{L. Székelyhidi}, Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 143, No. 1, 103--120 (2007; Zbl 1123.43002)] it was proved that spectral synthesis holds on \(G\) if and only if the torsion free rank of \(G\) is finite. A function on \(G\) is called a local polynomial, if its restriction to every finitely generated subgroup of \(G\) is a polynomial. In the paper under review the author proves that local spectral synthesis (that is, spectral synthesis using local polynomials instead of polynomials) holds on every abelian group having countable torsion free rank. More precisely, there is a cardinal \(\omega_1\leq\kappa\leq 2^\omega\) such that local spectral synthesis holds on an abelian group \(G\) if and only if the torsion free rank of \(G\) is less than \(\kappa\).
