A Finsler metric determines the distance between two points. Using distance coordinates and a characterization of the canonical spray, the authors investigate distance-preserving mappings. It is proved that these mappings preserve geodesics. A simple proof is given for the statement that a surjective distance-preserving mapping between Finsler spaces is a Finsler isometry. This is a Finslerian version of the Mayer-Stenrod theorem. Also the differentiability of a surjective regular submetry between reversible Finsler manifolds is proven.
