We consider the propagating reaction-diffusion waves that may develop in the isothermal, autocatalytic, chemical system \(A+2B\to3B\). Permanent form travelling wave solutions exist for all propagation speeds \(v\geq1/\sqrt 2\). The travelling wave with minimum propagation speed, \(v=1/\sqrt 2\), exhibits exponential decay in the concentration of the autocatalyst, \(B\), ahead of the wavefront, whilst for faster travelling waves, \(v>1/\sqrt 2\). the autocatalyst concentration decays algebraically. This difference in behaviour ahead of the wavefront has implications for the speed of travelling waves generated from an initial value problem.
