The authors study the error in the convolution backprojection algorithm for tomographic reconstruction of a function in the plane from its line integrals. In particular, the error due to the band-limiting effect of the window function is studied. Error estimates are derived for continuous functions for which the average \(f(x,r)=(2\pi)^{- 1}\int_{S^ 1}f(x+r\omega)d\omega\) has a continuous \(k\)-th derivative with respect to \(r\). A local version of this result is proved also, viz. if \(f(x)\) is continuous at \(x_ 0\) and \(f(x_ 0,r)\) has a continuous \(k-th\) derivative with respect to \(r\) at \(r=0\) then the same estimates hold for the reconstructed value of \(f(x_ 0)\).
