The reviewer [\textit{L. N. Vaserstein} and \textit{A. A. Suslin}, Izv. Akad. Nauk SSSR, Ser. Mat. 40, 993--1054 (1976; Zbl 0338.13015)] constructed a map from the unimodular 3-rows over any commutative ring into a Witt group of alternative forms over the ring. Addition operations on the rows do not change the map, so it gives a symbol from the orbits to the group. He proved that the symbol is bijective for two-dimensional rings. \textit{R. A. Rao} and \textit{W. van der Kallen} [in: \(K\)-theory. Contributions of the international colloquium, Strasbourg, France, June 29--July 3, 1992. Paris: Société Mathématique de France. 411--420 (1994; Zbl 0832.19002)] showed that the Vaserstein symbol needs not be injective over three-dimensional affine algebras over the real field, but is injective over three-dimensional affine algebras over a field of cohomological dimension one whose characteristic \(\neq 2, 3\). \textit{J. Fasel}, \textit{R. A. Rao} and \textit{R. G. Swan} [Publ. Math., Inst. Hautes Étud. Sci. 116, 223--243 (2012; Zbl 1256.13008)] gave another example of a real affine algebra of dimension three for which the symbol is not injective. The authors give an uncountably infinite family of non-isomorphic affine algebras of dimension three over the real field for which the symbol is not injective.
