Let \(\mathcal{H}\) be a Hilbert space. Let \(\mathcal{L}_1\subset\mathcal{L}_2\subset\cdots\subset\mathcal{L}_l\subset\mathcal{L}_{l+1}\subset\cdots\) be an increasing sequence of finite dimensional linear subspaces of \(\mathcal{H}\) such that the corresponding orthogonal projections \(P_l:\mathcal{H}\rightarrow\mathcal{L}_l\) converge strongly to the identity operator \(I\). Let \(T\) be a self-ajoint operator acting on \(\mathcal{H}\) and let \[ \text{Spec}_2(T,\mathcal{L}_l):=\{\lambda\in\mathbb{C}\,:\,P_l(T-\lambda I)^2:\mathcal{L}_l\rightarrow\mathcal{L}_l\text{ is not invertible}\} \] be the second order relative spectra. The paper under review investigates the question whether or not \[ \displaystyle{\lim_{l\rightarrow\infty}}\text{Spec}_2(T,\mathcal{L}_l)\supseteq\text{Spec}(T), \] where \(\text{Spec}(T)\) denotes the spectrum of \(T\). The main result of the paper is that \(\text{Spec}_2(T,\mathcal{L}_l)\) does not in general approximate the whole of the essential spectrum \(\text{Spec}_e(T)\) of \(T\).
