For any finite group \(G\), it is well known that the number of involutions in \(G\) is equal to the sum of the degrees of the irreducible complex characters of \(G\). If \(W=G\) is a finite Coxeter group, then this fact can be refined as: the number of involutions in each Kazhdan-Lusztig left cell \(\Gamma\) is equal to the number of terms in a decomposition of the left cell representation \([\Gamma]_1\) as a direct sum of simple \(W\)-modules. For \(W\) of classical type and the equal parameter case, this result is due to Lusztig. In this paper, the author gives a uniform proof for all \(W\) and weight functions \(L\). The main tool is a generalisation of the Frobenius-Schur indicator to symmetric algebras and the \(\widetilde J\)-ring which is a new version of the ring \(J\).
