Let \(K\) be a characteristic zero complete discrete valuation field with residue field \(k\) of positive characteristic. Let \(\rho:G_{K}\rightarrow \mathrm {GL}_{h}\left( \mathbb{Q}_{p}\right) \) be a \(p\)-adic representation of the absolute Galois group of \(K\). In [Invent. Math. 62, 89--116 (1980; Zbl 0463.12005)], \textit{S. Sen} describes the Lie algebra of \(\rho\left( G_{K}\right) \) in the case where \(k\) is perfect, obtaining a description in terms of the Sen operator \(\Theta\). If \(k_{K}\) is not perfect, say \(\left[ k:k^{p}\right] =p^{d},\;d\geq1,\) then \textit{O. Brinon} [Math. Ann. 327, No. 4, 793--813 (2003; Zbl 1072.11089)] constructed operators \(\Theta_{0},\dots ,\Theta_{d}\) for \(\rho,\) where \(\Theta_{0}=\Theta.\) In this work, the author generalizes Sen's result by describing the Lie algebra of \(\rho\left( G_{K}\right) \) in terms of Brinon's operators. Let \(V\) be the representation space for \(\rho.\) Then the Lie algebra of the inertia group \(I_{K}\) of \(G_{K}\) is the smallest \(\mathbb{Q}_{p}\)-subspace of \(\mathrm{End}_{\mathbb{Q}_{p}}V\) whose base change to \(\mathbb{C}_{p}\) (the completion of the algebraic closure of \(K\)) contains Brinon's operators (also base changed to \(\mathbb{C}_{p}\)).
