The aim of this paper is to characterize composition operators on the Besov type spaces \(B_{p,\alpha}\) (with standards weights) with closed range. This general topic has already been studied on other classical spaces of holomorphic functions on the unit disk (see [\textit{J. R. Akeroyd} and \textit{P. G. Ghatage}, Ill. J. Math. 52, No. 2, 533--549 (2009; Zbl 1191.47030); \textit{J. R. Akeroyd} et al., Integral Equations Oper. Theory 68, No. 4, 503--517 (2010; Zbl 1237.47026); erratum ibid. 76, No. 1, 131--143 (2013; Zbl 1280.47036); \textit{D. H. Luecking}, Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 128, No. 4, 1109--1116 (2000; Zbl 0959.47017); \textit{N. Zorboska}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 344, No. 2, 791--801 (1994; Zbl 0813.47037)] of the bibliography; see also [the reviewer et al., Rev. Mat. Iberoam. 28, No. 1, 57--76 (2012; Zbl 1248.47026)] and [\textit{A. Hartmann} et al., Collect. Math. 65, No. 3, 357--365 (2014; Zbl 1304.30071)]). The situation is different for spaces \(B_{p\alpha}\), compared to the Hardy or the Bergman spaces: first of all, the composition operators \(C_\varphi\) need not be bounded, even when the symbol \(\varphi\) belongs to the Besov space \(B_{p,\alpha}\). Theorem 3.3 presents a characterization of compactness of \(C_\varphi\) on \(B_{p,\alpha}\) in terms of \(B_{p,\alpha}\)-Carleson measure, or on the Nevanlinna counting function \(N_{p,\alpha}\). These two functions are known to be essentially equivalent in the classical framework (see [\textit{P. Lefèvre} et al., Math. Ann. 351, No. 2, 305--326 (2011; Zbl 1228.47028)]). Theorems 5.1 and 5.3 give some characterizations of composition operators with closed range. Concerning the tools involved, the idea is to transfer the known results on the Bergman or Dirichlet type spaces, with the help of a (nice) reverse type Carleson condition due to \textit{D. H. Luecking} [Ill. J. Math. 25, 1--11 (1981; Zbl 0437.30025)]. Moreover, as often, the characterization can be read as a strong negative condition of compactness.
