This paper develops a numerical scheme associated with the iterative method presented by \textit{K. Ramdani} et al., [ESAIM, Control Optim. Calc. Var. 13, No. 3, 503--527 (2007; Zbl 1126.93050)], which recovers initial conditions of conservative systems. In the method of Ramdani et al. [loc. cit.], the initial conditions are reconstructed by using observers. In this paper, a finite difference discretization in space of these observers is given. The scheme is proposed and numericaly analysed for the 1D wave equation. In order to avoid restrictions of the number of steps with respect to the mesh size, a numerical viscosity in the numerical observers is added. Several numerical experiments are presented and a generalization for other equations is given.
