The authors establish the existence of a nontrivial solution of a nonlinear Neumann problem depending on a parameter by using basically only one algebraic condition in place of asymptotic assumptions. They also prove multiplicity results obtaining, for instance, the existence of at least three positive solutions. Careful comparison with other results in the field is given. The approach is based on a local minimum theorem due to the first author.
