The authors show, assuming \(p=c\), that a free Abelian group of cardinality \(c\) admits a countably compact group topology with a non-trivial convergent sequence. This gives a partial answer to the following question due to \textit{D. Dikranjan} and \textit{D. Shakhmatov} [Question 14.16 and 14.17 in Topology Appl. 151, No. 1--3, 2--54 (2005; Zbl 1068.22001)] and [Selected topics from the structure theory of topological groups, in: \textit{E. Pearl} (Ed.), Open problems in topology. II. Amsterdam: Elsevier. xii, 763 p. (2007; Zbl 1158.54300)]: Let \(G\) be an infinite group admitting a countably compact (respectively, a pseudocompact) group topology. Does \(G\) have a countably compact (respectively, a pseudocompact) group topology that contains a non-trivial convergent sequence? The authors also describe how this result can be achieved by using selective ultrafilters.
