In the article under review, the authors study properties of the Okounkov bodies defined by Lazarsfeld-Mustata and Kaveh-Khovanskii. Let \(X\) be a smooth complex projective variety of dimension \(n\) and \(L\) a big line boundle on \(X\). For any flag \(Y_\bullet :X=Y_0\supset Y_1\supset Y_2\supset \ldots \supset Y_{n-1}\supset Y_n=\{ pt \}\) of smooth irreducible subvarieties of \(X\) with codimension \(i\), there is a convex body \(\Delta _{Y_\bullet }(X;L)\subset \mathbb R ^n\), called the Okounkov body, which encodes the asymptotic behaviour of the linear series \(|mL|\). For example the volume of \(L\) equals \(n!\text{vol}_{\mathbb R^n}(\Delta _{Y_\bullet }(X;L))\). The authors show that the set of convex bodies appearing as Okounkov bodies is countable, they give a complete characterization of the Okounkov bodies arising from \(\mathbb R\)-divisors on smooth projective surfaces (which are always polygonal) and they construct two examples of non-polyhedral Okounkov bodies.
