Let \[ R(T):=\int_1^T|\zeta(1+it)|^2\,dt-\zeta(2)T+\pi\log T. \] It is shown that there is a constant \(A\) so that, if \(T\leq t\leq 2T\) and \(T\geq 3\), then \[ R(T)=2\sum_{n<m\leq T}\frac{\sin(t\log m/n)}{mn\log m/n}+A+ \pi\log(t/T)-t/T+O((\log T)^{-1}). \] Using this it is deduced that there are constants \(B\) and \(C\) (with \(C>0\)) such that \[ \int_{1}^TR(t)\,dt=BT+O(T(\log T)^{-1}) \] and \[ \int_{1}^TR(t)^2\,dt=CT+O(T(\log T)^{-1}). \] These results should be compared with those of \textit{R. Balasubramanian, A. Ivić} and \textit{K. Ramachandra} [Enseign. Math., II. Sér. 38, No. 1-2, 13--25 (1992; Zbl 0753.11028)] in which the above integrals were shown to be \(O(T)\) and \(O(T(\log\log T)^4)\), respectively.
