\textit{H. R. Dullin}, \textit{G. Gottwald} and \textit{D. D. Holm} derived an integrable shallow water equation with linear and nonlinear dispersion [``An integrable shallow water equation with linear and nonlinear dispersion'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:nlin/0104004}], which reduces in two separate cases to the Korteweg-de Vries and Camassa-Holm equations. This paper is devoted to the two-component generalization of the Dulling-Gottwald-Holm equation. The authors show how to derive this two-component system from the Euler equations for an inviscid fluid with constant vorticity and a linear shear flow in the shallow water approximation. The authors also consider local and global well-posedness of the two-component system in the periodic domain (unit circle). They prove existence of local solutions in Sobolev spaces \(H^s\) with \(s \geq 2\) based on the work of \textit{J. Escher} et al. [Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. 19, No. 3, 493--513 (2007; Zbl 1149.35307)], where earlier works of T. Kato were applied to the class of Camassa-Holm equations. Then, the authors use the method of characteristics to prove wave breaking (blow up) in finite time. The wave breaking occurs provided the initial data for the two-component system satisfy some sufficient conditions described in Theorem 4.4 of this paper.
