Let \(E\) be a Banach space and \(C\) be a bounded closed convex subset of \(E\). \textit{R. E. Bruck} [``A common fixed point theorem for a commuting family of nonexpansive mappings'', Pac. J. Math. 53, 59--71 (1974; Zbl 0312.47045), Lemma 1] showed that the intersection of a descending sequence of nonexpansive retracts of \(C\) is the fixed point set of some nonexpansive mapping on \(C\). Using this result, the author proves that, if \(E\) has the weak* fixed point property (f.p.t), then \(E\) has the weak* f.p.t for commuting separable semitopological semigroups. This answers a problem raised by \textit{A. T.-M. Lau} and \textit{P. F. Mah} [``Fixed point property for Banach algebras associated to locally compact groups'', J. Funct. Anal. 258, No.~2, 357--372 (2010; Zbl 1185.43002)]. Then, studying ergodic retractions for semigroups in dual spaces, it is shown that, if \(C\) is a weak* closed convex subset of a dual Banach space with the weak* f.p.t and if \(\mathcal S = \{T_s : s \in S\}\) is a continuous representation of a commuting separable semitopological semigroup \(S\) on \(C\) with non-null fixed point set \(F\), then there exists a nonexpansive retraction \( P : C \rightarrow F \) for which \(PT_t = T_tP = P\), for any \(t \in S\), and, further, every weak* closed convex \(\mathcal S\)-invariant subset of \(C\) is also \(P\)-invariant.
