\textit{Z.Čerin} [Topology Appl. 123, No. 1, 57--68 (2002; Zbl 1011.55005)] proposed a `homotopy theory for topological semigroups'. The basic idea is that in all definitions of standard notions, instead of arbitrary subspaces and continuous maps only subsemigroups and continuous homomorphisms of semigroups are allowed. Homotopies are required to induce homomorphisms at all stages. The present authors continue this course by considering the homotopy extension property, absolute retracts, etc. The terminology for semigroups somewhat deviates from current practice.
