A note on some uniform algebra generated by smooth functions in the plane (Q416359)

The paper deals with the Bass stable rank, topological stable rank and dense stable rank of a topological algebra. Let \(K\) be a compact subset of the complex plane \(\mathbb C\). Then \(A_1(K)\) stands for the uniform closure on \(K\) of all complex-valued functions continuously differentiable on neighbourhoods of \(K\) and holomorphic in the interior of \(K\). The main goal is to determine the topological stable rank of an algebra \(A_1(K)\). As a by-product, many results about the ranks of the algebras \(P(K), R(K), A(K)\) and \(C(K)\), which have been studied more often, are given with proofs. After describing the maximal ideal space of \(A_1(K)\), the results about the topological stable rank, bass stable rank and dense stable rank of \(A_1(K)\) are proved. Since the proofs are written in a detailed way, the paper suits very well both for the experts and for students getting involved with the topics of ranks of algebras.
