\textit{P.-Y. Lee, W.-K. Tang} and \textit{D. Zhao} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 129, No. 8, 2273--2275 (2001; Zbl 0970.26004)] showed that \(f:[0,1]\to\mathbb R\) is a Baire-one function iff for every \(\varepsilon>0\) there is an ``\(\varepsilon\)-gauge functions'' \(\delta\) of \(f\). The authors show that functions \(f\) having approximately lower semicontinuous \(\varepsilon\)-gauge functions are approximately continuous and functions \(f\) having Darboux continuous \(\varepsilon\)-gauge functions are Darboux continuous. The finest result shows that (Baire-one) functions having the oscillation index at most \(\alpha<\omega_1\) have upper semicontinuous and Baire\(^*\)-one \(\varepsilon\)-gauges with oscillation index at most \(\alpha\). The last statement is related to a result by \textit{Z. Atok, W.-K. Tang} and \textit{D. Zhao} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 343, No. 2, 866-870 (2008; Zbl 1138.26303)] who showed that bounded Baire-one functions \(f\) have upper semicontinuous \(\varepsilon\)-gauge functions \(\delta\) with finite oscillation indexes.
