Due to a result of Matheron, an operator \(T\) acting on the space of continuous functions on \({\mathbb R}^n\) is morphological (i.e.) \(T\) is monotone and commutes with translations and upper semicontinuous nondecreasing functions) if and only if there exists a family \(B\) of subsets of \({\mathbb R}^n\) called structuring elements, such that \(Tu(x)=\inf_{B\in Bs}\sup_{y\in B}u(x+y)\). The paper links Matheron's formalism of morphological operators and PDE formalism of image processing. Introducing a scale parameter \(s\), denoting \(h=s^{2/(n+1)}\), \(T_h=T(B_s)\), fixing \(t>0\), and assuming affine invariance of structuring elements, the author shows that the limit semigroup of \(T_h^k\) when \(h\to 0\) and \(kh\to t\) is given by the unique nonlinear affine morphological PDE of the classification by \textit{L. Alvarez, F. Guichard, P. L. Lions} and \textit{J. M. Morel} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I 315, 265-268 (1992; Zbl 0805.68134)]. The author also uses Matheron's formalism in order to prove a result of \textit{H. Ishii} [GAKUTO Int. Ser., Math. Sci. Appl. 5, 111-127 (1995; Zbl 0844.35043)] concerning the mean curvature flow. The proofs are only sketched. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0905.00059].
