Let \(X\) be a normal variety defined over an algebraically closed field. Denote by \(\text{Div}(X)\) and \(\text{Car}(X)\) the group of Weil divisors, respectively Cartier divisors, on \(X\). The main result of the article is: Let \(X\) be a complete normal variety such that \((\text{Div}(X)/\text{Car}(X)) \otimes_{\mathbb{Z}} \mathbb{Q}\) is finite dimensional. Then \(X\) contains only finitely many maximal, under inclusion, open quasi-projective sets. A simple consequence of the main result is the following nice generalization of the Kleiman-Chevalley criterion: Let \(X'\) be a normal variety which can be embedded as an open subset of a variety \(X\) such that \((\text{Div}(X)/\text{Car}(X)) \otimes_{\mathbb{Z}}\mathbb{Q}\) is finite dimensional. Then \(X'\) is quasi-projective if and only if every finite subset of \(X'\) is contained in an affine open subset of \(X'\).
